On Sunday, August 23rd, day 109 we enjoyed a leisurely morning at the campground with Rob and Sheila. Our morning included a delicious breakfast cooked by Sheila and Rob! After our late breakfast, we picked up and headed home from the campground. I have already blogged about Prattsburgh, Naples and the surrounding area. So, I will talk about the Olde Country Store & More - 1849 in Atlanta, some call it North Cohocton. The Olde Country Store and More - 1849 is a journey back to your sweetest memories with more than 180 candies, a large selection of local goods, as well as an Olde World twist of glass ornaments and authentic German treats. The property is no ordinary address. A store has stood at this crossroads since 1849, and the historical building that houses the shop today dates back to 1873. After sitting closed from 2008 to 2015, it was Jenny and Denise who restored its purpose - starting entirely from scratch and rebuilding the business with care, grit, and genuine affection for their adopted community. The German-born women came here in 2015–their dad, Jeff Wells, was from this area. With their dad’s assistance, they brought this one-of-a-kind candy shop (and more) back to its luster. Jenny and Denise have put everything they have into this place. In Ten Years Since, they have made it thrive. However, now a very sad reality is looming for one of the great, nostalgic stores not just in New York State, but in all of America.
The 1849 Olde Country Store & More has been for sale. Twice last year, they had offers to purchase the iconic store, offers that fell through late in the game. Now the owners, the Wells girls, Jenny and Denise, have little option than to put a deadline on the operation. If they don’t sell the turnkey business by September 1, they will close for good and have a “going out of business” clearance sale of everything. For now, it remains open—it’s business as usual. But, time is running out for this Finger Lakes icon! We heard they were calling for rain sometime today, looks like the rain coming in over the hills. Hopefully, we can make it "home" and get set back up before the rain comes!
We made it! We are set up back at "home" in Livonia for the last time on this trip. When we leave here, this week, we are starting to head south and west toward our job in Branson with Yankee RV Tours.
Imagine that.... we spent a few hours with Dana & Dawn at No BS on Sunday afternoon!
Monday August 24th, brought cold and rainy weather. That is a perfect kind of day to take the chill out of the camper with some baking! Baked goods are some of the "payment" we give our camp host!
Day 111 was Tuesday August 25th. It's time for me to get my last hair cut on the road! While we are on the road, I tend to use Great Clips, because the notes from each but are available for the next stylist you get. I have had OK cuts and I have had great cuts. Today was the first time I left very disappointed. The stylist shows me the notes and says "you want it this way?" I see the length of the clippers that are normally used, I read finger length on top. So I say "yes." She takes her scissors and grabs my bangs, reaches up and snips them off! Wait, what! Really, you just clipped the longest part of my hair off to finger length. Did you not read the same instructions I did? Ughhhh... just get the rest of my hair cut, please, so I can get out of here! The good news is I won't see caravanners until Sept 18th and my hair will be plenty long for Mark to cut in October!
We had to grab a few items from the store while we were in Geneseo too. We have been watching this home that they raised on timbers and are working under it along the north end of Conesus Lake. Today, when we went by they were pumping concrete over the top of the home (on timbers) to the lake side of the home.
I have attached another picture from a different day that shows the home on the timbers. Pretty costly, but probably cheaper than demo and building new.
We set up our last No BS Steak night! My brother, Bob, and my sister-in-law, Ellen, came down from Webster to join us. We had such a great time visiting with our family and friends that I forgot to take pictures! But, the steak was delicious as always and the PB&J Cream Ale was exceptional!
Wednesday August 26th was the day for Charlie's last hair cut from Dan's Place in Livonia. He was able to get three haircuts from Dan in NY. That means we were here for a long time! We spent the afternoon checking over the camper and making sure all the little things we wanted done were done. In the evening, we visited Tony, Margo, Natalee and Conner. We wanted to see them before Natalee heads off to college, on Thursday, and we head south, on Friday. Natalee was working, but we enjoyed our visit with Tony, Margo and Conner, before Tony had to take Conner to hocky practice and Margo had to pack the car for the trip to Brockport to drop Natalee off on Thursday.
Day 113 was Thursday August 27th, our last full-day in the area of NY that we raised our family. We believe that we have seen and done everything that we wanted to while we were up here. Tonight, we had dinner with Randy & Sheila at the Avondale Pub. i got no pictures of them or the Avondale, but the Mason's building peaked my interest. The pub is located in the building next to the lodge, which operates out of the historic Avon Opera Block building. The Avon Opera Building is one of the most historically significant structures in the village of Avon, occupying a prominent place in the heart of the business district. The Italianate style Opera Hall was built in 1876, and despite suffering vacancy and disrepair for many years, the structure maintained a much of its architectural integrity in both the exterior and interior. The Town purchased the Opera House and adjoining Bank of Avon buildings in 2005. Final restorations were completed in 2024.
The sunset was spectacular as we drove "home," but capturing a great shot was illusive!
