Day 43 of our 2025 RVing Adventure with Historical & Musical Interludes

It's Friday June 13th, day 43 of our 2025 summer adventure and Mother Nature wanted to water the grass today. Debbie and I got our last walk together in between the rain drops. This morning Marcia and Larry came over with donuts. That was something they enjoyed doing on Sunday mornings in the Tiffani Ct cul-de-sac. They would get donuts from Hole-In-One. They would be individually bagged with each person's name on them. Today they came in regular boxes from a local favorite, the Donut Bank.

The Donut Bank is on their third generation of providing the Tri-State with the most delicious and highest quality bagels, donuts, and cookies around, all served with friendly smiles and unmatched customer service. So, call them old-fashioned about some things, like keeping every one of our bakeries meticulously clean. Even before they opened their first Donut Bank Bakery & Coffee Shop in 1967, their family had a proud tradition of baking experience. They continue to provide old-world goodness to their customers and friends, upholding and extending that tradition in every baked good they offer.

As the rain continued to come down, Marcia and Larry headed home and got a few things ready for their next visitor. We had time to get some of our stuff ready in the RVs, as we both leave Evansville tomorrow. Our plan was to catch a baseball game today, but again... Mother Nature had other plans. The Evansville Otters had a home game this Friday night. Their arrival in 1995 marked the return of professional baseball to Evansville after a decade-long absence following the Triplets' relocation. The Otters plays at Bosse Field, a historic ballpark that has hosted various baseball teams over the years. It was also the filming location for the movie "A League of Their Own". Bosse Field opened in 1915, it was the first municipally owned sports stadium in the US, It's the third-oldest ballpark still in regular use for professional baseball, surpassed only by Fenway Park (1912) in Boston and Wrigley Field (1914) in Chicago.

We decided to meet for dinner at Frontier Restaurant and Bar. Although the origins of the Frontier Restaurant and Bar in Daylight, Indiana are not officially documented, it is well known by families that have lived here for generations, that Daylight had its origins around 1884 when railroad tracks were laid across North Green River Rd. Eventually the old rail workers traveling through the area, set up a box car, removed the wheels and used it as storage and possibly a place to rest. When the train left Evansville in the dark of early morning, by the time it made it to the boxcar, it would be “Daylight” and that’s how the little town got it name.

In time the little town grew, had a Post Office in 1900, a few businesses and a bar. It is thought that the Frontier is situated fairly close to where the old boxcar was located over a century ago on what is now Indiana Hwy 57. The railroad tracks are still there, and the Frontier sits just a stone throw away from the tracks that were laid in 1884! The Frontier as we know it today came to be in about 1954. It was just a cinder block saloon with no restaurant. It burned down in the early 1990’s and was rebuilt as a bar with a small restaurant. Over the years it has changed ownership a few times. It is currently owned by Garrett and Melissa Hartig. Both Garret and Melissa have strong ties to the community with Garrett’s growing up on Evansville’s North side and Melissa growing up in the small community of Elberfeld, in Northern Warrick County. The Hartig’s goal for the Frontier is to not only retain its history along with its nostalgic and friendly bar atmosphere, but to also provide excellent food and service to all who visit!

While we were there, Mother Nature came back with a vengeance. The rain came down hard and the wind blew! You can see from the standing water in the fields, that there was a great deal of rain! We truly enjoyed our time in Evansville with Debbie, Jim, Marcia, and Larry.

Saturday Jim & Debbie start to head back to Florida. While Charlie & I head to Greenwood IN to see Craig & Tracy!

Stay tuned for more Two Lane Adventures!
