Serious Food ... Along the Southeastern Shore of Conesus Lake

Have you ever lived in a town for a long time and never knew of a food establishment? Well that happened to us last night … our friends, Randy & Sheila took us there!

Too bad it was our last night in the Conesus Lake area of New York … we will have to frequent this establishment upon our next warm weather visit to the area! Shoreless Acres is a “Mom & Pop” type convenience store along the south eastern shore of Conesus Lake and Shoreless Acres Serious Food is the extension of this establishment. Yes, Serious Food is the name of the eatery!

It is housed in an old railroad caboose. It offers a cash only simple menu of food, open air seating at picnic tables, a covered pavilion and an enclosed pavilion both offering brightly colored picnic tables. The fence that borders the back of the property is one of the most unique I have ever seen, it is created from water skies.

Yes, you heard me right … old and a few newer water skies! We looked over many of them and or friends reminisced about their water skies. We found a one of a kind water ski under the open air pavilion. Being a Floridian now, I spotted a signed water ski from Cypress Gardens. It was signed by Mindy Shaffer in 1971. It is a collector item for another reason than just being signed … Cypress Gardens is now Lego Land, and while there is still a water ski show, however the girls have been replaced with pirates!

If you are expecting a fancy fair of food, this is not the place for you! If you are looking for quality, tasty food and good prices … this is the place to visit. Don’t look for a Serious Food fix in the winter months, the owners are enjoying their winters in Jamaica, perfecting their jerk recipe. It is only open during the warmer months in western NY, from Memorial Day until Labor Day.

Besides the hamburgers, italian sausage, and curly fries, there are some area favorites that many come to Serious Food to enjoy! I have to brag on the fresh cut curly fries. They are served as a heaping pile resembling an over-sized brick, some might say they are the size of a concrete block. They are very tasty and a dieters guilty pleasure, especially after being doused with malt vinegar and sprinkled with some salt.

One of the local favorites that you can enjoy is what western New Yorkers call "hot sauce." Don’t confuse it with Frank’s Red Hot or Tabasco. This western NY condiment is more like a meat sauce, containing ground beef and seasoned with chili powder and other spices. Another Rochester New York establishment is famous for this “hot sauce” too … Nick Tahou’s. Many locals have created their own versions of hot sauce and sprinkle it on everything! The best way to enjoy your burger is with "everything." You will enjoy it smothered in hot sauce, ketchup, yellow mustard, pickles and chopped onion. Serious Food and Nick Tahou’s, as well as many other western NY eateries feature their own versions of a “garbage” plate …. a couple of bun-less burgers or dogs, on top of macaroni salad, beans, and potato home fries topped with a generous helping of hot sauce.

We spent about $23.00 for two drinks, an appetizer of fried pickles and pepper rings, an italian sausage patty sandwich, a garbage plate and one order of curly fries. I loved the decor and the water ski fence. There were several black birds enjoying the flowers in the Coca-Cola barrel! If you are up in the Conesus Lake area in the summer months, ensure to stop by Shoreless Acres Serious Food and enjoy some serious food!

  2. The hot sauce is actually Greek style hotsauce.
